More police will be deployed this weekend in parts of Long Beach with high amounts of DUI-related collisions and/or arrests as part of the police department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign, authorities announced.

The Long Beach Police Department’s (LBPD) DUI Enforcement Team will send out saturation patrols on Saturday, June 4 between 7:00PM and 3:00AM, according to an LBPD release.

The state saw 867 DUI-related deaths and more than 23,000 DUI-related serious injuries in 2013, the release stated. The LBPD has investigated 1,032 DUI collisions, which have claimed seven lives and resulted in 370 injuries, over the last three years.

Authorities said police will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving—which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes, the release stated.

This DUI operation was funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
