Long Beach officials closed the city’s beaches today a lighting storm rolls through the area today and into Wednesday morning.
“It’s all pretty typical protocol,” Marine Chief Gonzalo Medina said.
The rain hit parts of Long Beach at about 4:30 p.m., moving west from Orange County toward Los Angeles, according to the National Weather Service. Lighting and thunder could also be heard over the city in the afternoon as the rain passed over.

Winds may reach between 5 to 10 miles per hour and rain rates can reach up to one inch per hour, according to the NWS.
Skies are expected to clear up by Wednesday before 11 a.m. with, according to the NWS. It is not clear when the beaches will reopen.
