2:00pm | The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation announced today that they will donate $250,000 in college scholarships to fourteen students in the Long Beach Unified School District, in recognition of their academic achievement.

This is the second consecutive year that the Broad Foundation has awarded the amount to college-bound LBUSD students, who are eligible for the scholarship money because the district was a finalist for the Broad Prize in both 2008 and 2009. The Broad Prize is considered the most renowned recognition in the nation for large urban school districts.

“These students are to be commended for working hard in high school and we are proud to award them with Broad Prize scholarships as they pursue college and careers,” said Eli Broad, founder of The Broad Foundation.

“They represent the success of the Long Beach Unified School District because they have demonstrated not only academic achievement but more importantly academic improvement.”

Broad Foundation recipients are awarded not specifically to the district’s elite students, but to those who have economic need and who have drastically improved their grades or overcome significant odds.

Students who plan to attend four-year universities will receive $20,000 over four years, and students planning to attend two-year institutions will receive $5,000 over two years.
