The Long Beach Unified School District last night voted to make cuts that will save $17 million from the budget this year, with approximately $7.7 million coming in the form of savings that will be on-going for at least four years.
In light of the current budget crisis, LBUSD officials made reference to the continued cuts that will need to be made.
Superintendent Chris Steinhauser called the $17 million savings, “a drop in the bucket.” LBUSD board President Mary Stanton said, “This is just the beginning.”
Among the services cut were most Summer School offerings. Classes during the summer are now only available for the purpose of making up credit deficiencies, and summer school for middle school general education was cut entirely.
Another cut was to student transportation. More than 1,000 students will be affected by cuts that will eliminate their bus routes.
More to come…
