As a new parent, one thing I’ve realized is how much conflicting information is available for raising a child.  Hundreds of books on the market and many online sites give differing and conflicting ideas on everything from vaccines, to sleep patterns, to remedies for a sick pediatric child.  I was excited to find a pediatrician locally who took all of this information into account for me and blended it together to treat my child.  A trained M.D., Dr. Pam Middleton incorporates both allopathic techniques with natural and lifestyle remedies.

Pam Middleton is a medical doctor specializing in integrative pediatrics. Her pediatric patients refer to her as “Dr. Pam.” She has been practicing medicine since 1995. Dr. Pam was introduced to alternative medicine several years ago by a brilliant naturopathic physician who became her mentor. This began a paradigm shift that lead her to integrate her traditional medical training with alternative therapies so that she could provide patients with “the best of both worlds.”

What brought you to Long Beach?

There was a need in the area for a D.A.N. pediatrician.  I practice out of a D.A.N center, seeing both general pediatric and autistic cases.

Explain to those who may not know what D.A.N. is.

D.A.N. stands for Defeat Autism Now and takes the Bio-medical approach to treating autism.    Many parents are told there is nothing they can do for their children other than psychotropic drugs.  In conjunction with their physical and behavioral therapy the bio-medical approach can be very helpful for many autistic children.

Tell us how you combine allopathic (medical doctor) methods with natural methods for the community of Long Beach?

Well, it seems the longer I’m in practice the more comfortable I become with incorporating natural methods.  I start off with trying to prevent things through lifestyle and diet.  By doing this, I don’t have use the allopathic method of prescribing medicine as much.  But when the need arises I do.  After that I then add a homeopathic medicine which can prevent this issue from happening in the future.

Long Beach parents are very busy; give them four simple tips to make their child’s life a little healthier.

  1. Strengthen your child’s immune system with healthy foods.
  2. Be open to nontraditional treatment options such as homeopathy.
  3. Don’t stress over things out of your control.
  4. Have fun with your children!
