Long Beach Memorial rehabilitation patient, doctors, nurses and therapists faced off against each other at the 4th annual WiiHAB Championship, a fundraiser benefiting the MemorialCare Rehabilitation Institute at Long Beach Memorial. The annual WiiHAB Championship helped to raise funds for new rehabilitation equipment, such as the Dynavision D2 – which helps patients with cognitive processing, concussion, reactive training and more. The concept of the WiiHAB Championship came from the use of the Nintendo Wii® system as a tool for rehabilitation in occupational and physical therapy for patients who have had a catastrophic injury or a disabling disease.
“We use the Nintendo Wii system at Long Beach Memorial as a rehabilitation tool for patients recovering from stroke, broken bones, surgery and more,” says Jason Koh, D.O., co-medical director, MemorialCare Rehabilitation Institute, Long Beach Memorial. “The Wii system is beneficial to their physical recovery; while patients are ‘playing’ they are actually doing therapy, improving their coordination, endurance and strength, and they are having fun while doing it. It also gives them the opportunity to interact with their therapists and other patients.”
The WiiHAB Championship event featured four teams; led by Long Beach Memorial physicians, nurses and therapists, who competed for the gold in Wii archery, Frisbee, jet skiing and canoeing with a finale dance-off. The teams were competitively fundraising through online fundraising pages, bake sales and garage sales leading up to the event. More than $34,000 was raised for the Memorial Medical Center Foundation, on behalf of Long Beach Memorial. Team Koh, led by Jason Koh, D.O., took home the gold for finishing first place in the Wii sports challenges.
