Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske (left) and Councilmember Patrick O’Donnell (right)

6:00am | Greggory Moore Reporting | Fifth District Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske wants you to look into the future and see her in the 70th Assembly District seat. We know that because since yesterday GerrieSchipskeforAssembly.com has told us that on September 23 — i.e., this coming Friday — Schipske announced her plans to seek the seat in the 2012 general election.

But presenting a challenge much more serious than chronological issues is the councilmember to her right, as last month Patrick O’Donnell threw his hat in the ring for the same seat.

The Website for Schipske’s campaign touts accomplishments such as “start[ing] two vital programs — Long Beach Cares and the RxforLongBeach.com website that helps residents obtain free prescription medicine” and her having introduced an “innovative repair program and scheduling system [that] saved approximately 30% in the costs of repairing city sidewalks.” It also features ad-type graphics, such as four infants holding telephones, with the caption, “We thought you need to know Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske…Really fights hard for our libraries.”

Schipske’s press release quotes her as saying, “My top priorities are: Getting California Working Again; Improving Our Schools; Protecting Our Quality of Life; and Making Government Open and Transparent. ”

The new 70th Assembly District, drawn based on data collected in the 2010 census, includes Long Beach, Signal Hill, San Pedro, and Catalina Island.
