In the wake of tragic events last month that led to the death of one-year old Kaylee Alvarez, several touching stories have arisen of regular Long Beach citizens lending a helping hand to the mourning Alvarez family. Another that we’re happy to report has been working hard to raise money and support for the family is the Beach Cities Mustang Club, which is closing in on its goal to raise $5,000.

The club held its annual car show at the Queen Mary back on September 20, and decided on the spot to dedicate the event in Kaylee’s memory just eight days after she was struck and killed by a drunk driver as the Alvarez family pulled Kaylee and her brother across the 10th & Redondo intersection in a wagon. The Beach Cities Mustang Club announced on their PA system that the event would be dedicated to Kaylee as spectators began to arrive, and that they could contribute by playing a Hot Wheels Racing game that had been setup at the show.

“I just had a big car show I was doing and thought I could use it to help the family,” said BCMC president Jon Schultz in a recent e-mail.

At the car show, the Beach Cities club raised nearly $1,500 for the cause and have continued to collect donations since then. Schultz says he hopes to reach the $5,000 goal and donate it to the Alvarez family after the club’s meeting next week.
