Fire crews doused a small blaze in the attic of a house near the Carmelitos Housing Project this morning.

Firefighters rushed to the scene after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the attic of a home in the 600 block of Via Barola around 7:45 a.m., Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Matt Dobberpuhl said.

When the first engine got to the scene, there was a moderate amount of smoke come from vents in the attic according to Dobberpuhl. Firefighters were able to douse the flames before 7:55, he said.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze, and it’s unclear if anyone was home at the time, Dobberpuhl said. The Red Cross is helping the two people who live at the home find another place to stay, he said.

Investigators were still trying to determine what caused the fire and evaluating how much damage it did, according to Dobberpuhl.
