An early morning vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident at Palo Verde Ave. and Belen St. resulted in the death of an unidentified elderly woman Saturday.

Police say that the woman, who was not carrying identification but appeared to be in her 70s or 80s, attempted to cross westbound Palo Verde at Belen at around 5:40AM when she was struck by a 2006 Chevy Tahoe traveling southbound on Palo Verde. She was crossing at the north end of the intersection which does not have a crosswalk and is posted as “no crossing allowed.” Another sign directs pedestrians to cross at the south end of the intersection’s crosswalk.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics transported the unconscious woman to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Because of her lack of ID, she is being listed as Jane Doe pending further investigation by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the Tahoe, a 31 year-old Long Beach resident, remained at the scene, was interviewed by officers and released.
