Detectives have arrested the person they suspect gunned down a homeless man in an industrial area of Long Beach this week, police announced Wednesday morning.
Officers took 29-year-old Carlos Gustavo Ohm into custody around 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, just hours after the deadly shooting that happened at the corner of 17th Street and Daisy Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department said in a news release.
Police said they arrested Ohm near Chestnut Avenue and 15th Street, which is only about three blocks away from the scene of the shooting.
Police allege Ohm shot the man around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, leaving him wounded on the sidewalk. Authorities haven’t released the dead man’s identity, saying only that he’s in his 30s and that he lived at a small homeless encampment at the intersection where he died.
Neighbors said they’d seen the man walking around the area with his dog.
Police said they are still investigating the case and would not provide any more details about what led them to Ohm or whether he has any prior relationship with the victim.
Police previously said the suspected shooter may have ridden off on a bike after the killing. It’s unclear if Ohm was that person.
Ohm is being held in lieu of $2 million bail on suspicion of murder, according to police.
