A teenager took himself to a hospital after being shot outside a home in North Long Beach Thursday night, according to authorities.

Police said they learned about the shooting when someone reported hearing gunfire in the 5800 block of Brayton Avenue, which is near the intersection of South Street and Orange Avenue.

Officers didn’t find anyone wounded in the area, but they discovered bullet casings, according to LBPD spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez. Officers soon learned a 17-year-old boy had “self-transported” to a hospital, De Prez said. His wounds weren’t life-threatening, she said.

Police believe the teenager was with a group of people outside a home on Brayton when the attacker or attackers fired on them from a vehicle.

The vehicle and anyone inside were gone when police arrived, De Prez said. No suspect description was available.

Detectives believe the shooting was gang-related, which Long Beach police define as a crime committed for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with a gang.
