A Long Beach man died Monday night after being struck by a car in North Long Beach, and police say they are searching for the driver responsible.

Police said the 37-year-old victim was standing in the roadway of Artesia Boulevard’s eastbound lanes, just west of Rose Avenue, when the driver of a dark-colored sedan hit him. The driver of the sedan fled the scene and was last seen going eastbound on Artesia Boulevard, police said.

Police arrived at the scene around 11:15 p.m. and found the man lying in the roadway of Artesia Boulevard, officials said. Police aided the victim until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived to transport him to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police said speed may have been a factor in the collision.

The identity of the victim has not been released as authorities work to notify the next of kin.
