A 58-year-old man pleaded no contest Thursday to charges he fatally shot his estranged wife in front of their two kids on Christmas Day two years ago in Bellflower.
Santiago Palacios Salgado faces 40 years to life in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder. He’s set to be sentenced Oct. 3 in Norwalk.
According to sheriff’s officials and prosecutors, Salgado went to a home in the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. Dec. 25, 2017, and fatally shot Gabriela Garcia, 41. Sheriff’s officials said Salgado then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the upper body.
Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. Salgado was taken to a hospital and later arrested.
According to the sheriff’s department, the couple had a son and daughter, respectively aged 6 and 8 at the time of the shooting. The children were at the home at the time of the shooting but were not injured.
