An 18-year-old man is expected to survive his injuries after he was shot during one of five separate shootings that were reported in Long Beach over the Grand Prix weekend, authorities said.

The incidents—which happened throughout the city from Friday night to early Monday morning—bring the total number of reported shootings in the city to just under 55 so far this year, according to Post records.

FRIDAY, APRIL 15

Police responded to a shots heard call on the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue at 10:06PM, said Brad Johnson, spokesman for the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

No injuries were reported but evidence was collected, he added.

The incident happened a few blocks from Martin Luther King Jr. Park, near 21st Street.

SATURDAY, APRIL 16

Officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Myrtle Avenue at 1:14AM regarding a no-hit shooting, Johnson said.

The incident happened a few blocks from Poly High School. Authorities recovered evidence from the scene.

Saturday’s second shooting happened on the 1700 block of Pine Avenue in the city’s Washington neighborhood at about 11:52PM.

Though no one was struck, two victims told police they were shot at from suspects in a vehicle, according to Johnson.

Authorities believe the incident may be gang-related.

MONDAY, APRIL 18

Police were dispatched to a local hospital at 1:03AM regarding a “shooting victim who walked into the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the lower torso,” Johnson said.

The victim—identified only as an 18-year-old man—was uncooperative in the investigation and refused to give a description of the suspect or say where the crime took place, other than stating it happened “downtown,” according to Johnson. It is unknown if the incident is gang-related, he added.

A few hours later, at 3:30AM, officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Obispo Avenue in the city’s Zaferia neighborhood regarding a residence struck by gunfire.

Johnson said the occupants of the home were asleep when the shooting happened.

No one was injured. Evidence of a shooting was collected, Johnson said.

All of the shootings remain under investigation.
