9:55am | Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) will officially dedicate its new, $105 million Hall of Science, the largest single capital building project in the campus’ 62-year history and the largest science facility in the CSU system. The event will include guest speakers and tours of the new building.
The CSULB Hall of Science dedication ceremony will take place on Friday, Sept. 23, at 11:00am adjacent to the Hall of Science site (formerly the site of Peterson Hall 3) across from the University Bookstore. The university is located at 1250 Bellflower Boulevard.
The new Hall of Science opened this fall and completes the university’s Natural Sciences Complex. Within the complex, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) provides CSULB’s principal curriculum for majors leading to careers in science, technology, engineering and the health professions. Two-thirds of all science courses at the university are being taught in this building.
The new Hall of Science houses 31 directed studies laboratories, 29 teaching laboratories, several large lecture halls and a science learning center for k-12 outreach. Other features include a marine biology lab, three rooftop greenhouses and a rooftop astronomy platform.
The keynote speaker for the dedication will be Robert Decker, founding member of the Feinberg Cardiovascular Research Institute and professor emeritus of medicine and cell and molecular biology at the Northwestern University School of Medicine. He is also an alumnus of CSULB.
Following the dedication, there will be tours of the new building. These tours will include visits to the Science Learning Center; marine biology labs; various research and teaching labs, including the Signal Hill Petroleum Environmental Geochemistry Lab, the G2 Software Systems Computer Lab, and the Georgia Griffiths Lecture Hall. Also on display will be the university’s Mobil Science Museum and boats for marine biology research.
