The Long Beach Police Department received a new 3D sonar device earlier this week that will assist them in underwater inspections and preventative maintenence at the Port of Long Beach.

As a departments that partners with the Port for its security program, LBPD received one of Florida-based Coda Octopus Group’s Underwater Inspection System (UIS), at the heart of which is the EchoScope, the world’s first real-time 3D sub-sea sonar. The machine generates immediate high-quality images of what is under the water and has assisted in dredging and underwater construction projects around the world.

“This is an important acquisition for us,” said Sergeant Steven Smock of the Long Beach Police Department. “It is state-of-the-art technology, which gives us productivity gains, and more importantly the detailed real time data which is an indispensable requirement for security today. We are excited about this and working with Coda Octopus we have already trained a number of our officers to operate this equipment.”

Details about how the LBPD plans to use this device will be released next week.
