11:01am | Container cargo volume rose by 2.3 percent in May from a year ago at the Port of Long Beach, while imports were up 4 percent, according to a report issued by the port. Exports fell by 6.1 percent from to May 2010, the report shows.
The port moved 536,681 20-foot equivalent container units in May compared with 524,715 TEUs in May of last year, according to the report. Port terminals handled 375,100 TEUs of import containers and 130,161TEUs of export containers. Empty container moves were up 8.1 percent to 131,420 TEUs. Most empty containers are bound overseas for refilling.

In other port news, the port is set to premiere its centennial documentary, Faces of the Port – Celebrating 100 Years, during the port’s 100th birthday party celebration on June 25. The 30-minute film is narrated by actor Robert Wagner.
The birthday event includes two screenings of the documentary, rides and exhibits. It’s free to attend. Space is limited for the documentary screenings, so it’s advisable to reserve space by visiting PoLB.com/movie.
Following the initial screening, which occurs at 3 p.m., will be a history panel discussion with personalities featured in the film moderated by maritime reporter George Cunningham. Other participants include former mayor Beverly O’Neill and former Long Beach police chief and port security director Bill Ellis. A second screening is set for 4:15 p.m.
The celebration is on the docks on Pier E, south of the Gerald Desmond Bridge at Ocean Boulevard and Pico Avenue. Parking is free, and there will be a bicycle valet.
