Hundreds of business and community leaders will shadow local school principals this Friday, Nov. 16 as part of the annual Principal for a Day event co-sponsored by the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the Long Beach Unified School District and the Long Beach Education Foundation. The annual event is the largest single-day involvement of local businesses in Long Beach public schools. The day offers a behind-the-scenes look at life in California’s third largest school district while creating lasting partnerships in education.
Long Beach philanthropists Mike and Arline Walter will be Superintendents for a Day, shadowing Superintendent Chris Steinhauser. Cal State Long Beach’s landmark Pyramid events center bears the Walters’ names in honor of the couple’s $2.1 million donation to the university. Mike Walter formerly headed CSULB’s College of Business Administration and serves on the Long Beach Harbor Commission.
Shadowing Felton Williams as Board of Education President For A Day will be the President of California State University, Long Beach, F. King Alexander. Shadowing Jon Meyer as Board of Education Vice President For A Day will be Superintendent-President of Long Beach City College, Eloy Oakley. Each of these people will participate in the end-of-day debriefing to discuss their observations.
