Dr. Felton Williams
1:00pm | Long Beach Board of Education President Dr. Felton Williams announced the endorsements of Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster and former Mayors Beverly O’Neill, Thomas Clark, Ernie Kell and Eunice Sato in his race for a fourth term on the Board of Education.
Dr. Williams represents Area 2 of Long Beach Unified School District which includes Cabrillo, CAMS, Poly and Reid high schools as well as three middle schools and ten elementary/K-8 schools.
“Felton Williams, along with current members of the LBUSD Board of Education, has been outstanding in his leadership for eight years and should be re-elected,” said former Mayor O’Neill. “The district received national acclaim as the “Best Urban School District in America” in 2003, and was re-nominated in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010, in its efforts to close the achievement gap. In spite of its significant budget challenges, the district is committed to making each student career or college ready. I strongly support his reelection.”
“I am proud of the work we have done – my board colleagues, district teachers, staff and myself – to make LBUSD one of the top performing school district’s in the nation,” said Dr. Williams. “LBUSD, LBCC and CSULB’s Long Beach College Promise and Reid High School’s Bridge to College Program show the Board and district’s ability to forge community and institutional partnerships that ensure all our students are prepared to succeed. They’re two examples of why the district and its leadership have been recognized nationally and internationally for providing a top quality education.”
Williams, who has a Ph.D. in Education Administration from Claremont Graduate University, has served as Dean of the LBCC School of Business and Social Science since 1997, and retired in 2007. In addition to his eight years as a LBUSD Trustee, Dr. Williams has 36 years of experience in education, beginning at California State University Long Beach, followed by positions at California State University Dominguez Hills and Sacramento City College prior to assuming his position as Dean of Business and Social Science at LBCC.
