WSLBContinuing its support to domestic violence service providers, Blue Shield of California Foundation announced last week that it has awarded a $15,000 grant to WomenShelter of Long Beach.

The grant will help support the shelter’s capacity to provide essential services and shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their families, according to a press release sent out Friday.

“Domestic violence can happen to anyone, and impacts everyone,” said Peter Long, president and CEO of the foundation in a statement. “Though we all have a role to play, it is organizations like WomenShelter that are there when women, children, men, and families need help the most. WomenShelter is making our communities safer and healthier every single day, and we remain committed to ensuring that they-and the entire field-have the resources and adaptability to support survivors and bring us closer to ending domestic violence in California.”

Officials said the unrestricted funding is part of a group of grants meant to empower and strengthen domestic violence service providers and allow them to adjust to unexpected changes and challenges.

“This generous support from Blue Shield of California assists WomenShelter in providing emergency shelter and services to all intimate partner violence victims,” WomenShelter Executive Director Mary Ellen Mitchell said in a statement. “The grant also supports our important prevention programs presented in schools and campuses to help young people recognize the signs of potentially violent behavior and give them tools to build healthy relationships.”
