The 5th annual “Laufen und Schwimmen und Luau” Biathlon, the third of three events celebrating the life of West German Olympic swimmer Klaus Barth, took place last Sunday the 18th.  Klause, an Ironman record holder, beloved swimming and water polo coach at Wilson High School died on Oct. 22, 2006, after a six-year battle against brain cancer. He was 57.

The event raised money for the Neuro-Oncology program at UCLA, where Barth received treatment.

The event began at 9:00 am on a foggy morning at Belmont Plaza Pool. Both casual and serious athletes joined in the 3-mile run and 20 lap swim. Finishers received the Klaus Barth Biathlon T-shirt, a special design featuring Barth when he crossed the finish line fourth in the 1986 Ironman triathlon.
