KAMM Cares is a foundation created by Kenneth McKenzie to honor his sister as she battled breast cancer.
Dedicated to the care and assistance of those going through treatment of breast cancer, money raised by the Foundation provides for such necessities as child care costs and groceries, to name just two. The primary goal of KAMMCARES is to give those going through cancer more opportunities to make their lives better.
“There are so many worthy breast cancer charities that are dedicated to education, research and treatment of breast cancer, but I couldn’t find one that simply offered assistance to help ease the financial burden that oftentimes goes part and parcel with the disease,” says McKenzie, whose sister is currently living cancer-free.
McKenzie and his sister, Katherine, became very close after experiencing the death of their father together. Ken was only twelve, and saw what a difference sensitive and caring Mortuary professionals could make in the lives of others, and that became an inspiration for him. After completing courses in mortuary science and working at corporate funeral homes, he opened his business in 1994, McKenzie Mortuary.
McKenzie is known for his unique fund raising events, such as yearly estate sales that benefit Southern California’s hospice programs, and a season premier of “Six Feet Under” which raised funds for Long Beach AIDS Walk.
His current project, the Men of Mortuaries™ calendar, benefits KAMM Cares entirely. Gathered from across the country, seventeen undertakers, morticians, embalmers and funeral directors were flown to Long Beach in May to shoot the photos for the 2008 Men of Mortuaries calendar. This one promises to be as attractive and interesting, and fun as the premiere 2007 edition.
Everyone needs a new calendar at the beginning of a new year. This is not only a perfect gift for the holidays, but a special gift for women living with breast cancer and their families.
