{"id":944,"date":"2018-02-13T15:41:06","date_gmt":"2018-02-13T23:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/?p=62210"},"modified":"2018-02-13T15:41:06","modified_gmt":"2018-02-13T23:41:06","slug":"new-mural-in-long-beach-tunnel-seeks-to-make-america-kind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/art\/new-mural-in-long-beach-tunnel-seeks-to-make-america-kind","title":{"rendered":"New Mural in Long Beach Tunnel Seeks to \u201cMake America Kind\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dreamers Mural in Long Beach by Teachr1\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/255340703?h=60291ed92f&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Photos and video courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/brutaldilan\">Dilan Garcia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A new mural in Long Beach by the street artist Teachr is a portrait of Dilan Garcia, a 21-year-old Dreamer and film student at Cal State Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Teachr\u2019s friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/banditstreetart\/\">Bandit<\/a>\u00a0had invited him to create a piece along with other street artists in support of \u201cThe Dreamers in Long Beach: a DACA Inspired Mural Collaboration\u201d, curated by the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streetartistinresidence.org\/\">Street Artist in Residence<\/a> in collaboration with the City of Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles and Long Beach artists, including past <em>Pow! Wow! Long Beach<\/em> participant Erick Guadarrama (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sparc_eg\/\">@sparc_eg<\/a>) and the prolific Goop Massta (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/goopmassta\/\">@goopmassta<\/a>), have contributed pieces to the tunnel, now an urban hallway of DACA-inspired murals located just off the beaten path of the Los Angeles River Trail underneath 6th Street in Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia, who was born in Honduras in 1996, raised in Compton and currently lives in Koreatown, filmed the progression of the mural and released the video on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BfFXWipl75M\/<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving in uncertainty about something as being accepted and being able to continue to live in a place you&#8217;ve called home since before you could walk has personally been depressing,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cI envy people who don&#8217;t have to keep their legal status, ability to work legally and the fate of their family\u2019s future in this country constantly running through their head. That stress, anxiety and depression really took its toll on me since Donald Trump was elected as president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teachr said he chose this particular piece of the tunnel to paint because a previous DACA-inspired mural had been covered with graffiti and he wanted to \u201ctake the space back for the Dreamers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m hoping people see the face of an actual Dreamer and see his hat that reads \u2018Make America Kind\u2019 and understand that these are real people who mean well and want to make America kind,\u201d Teachr said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-62212\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screenshot-1-970x549.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The two met four years ago when Garcia reached out to the artist as a freshman in college. Having developed an interest in street art and photography at 15, at 17 Garcia wanted to know if he could make a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q0JcWOfSaO0\">video<\/a> of Teachr and take some photos in his studio for fun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe trusted me enough to let me into his home and long story short, four years later, I have over 200 videos under my belt and see myself doing nothing else with my life but spotlighting others through my short films as I first did with Teachr,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Garcia is hopeful he\u2019ll become a citizen in the near future, but fulfilling his mom\u2019s dream of him graduating from college is what fuels his motivation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose Dilan because he is a dreamer and is better than most people I know and deserves to be here more than a lot of Americans,\u201d Teachr said. \u201cHe&#8217;s a hard worker and very skilled with filming and editing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BfEwREVgZpc\/<\/p>\n<p>The young filmmaker has also completed work on fellow DACA recipients, including <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/243974345\">this 10-minute documentary<\/a> on Los Angeles resident and cyclist Oscar Revilla.
