His mastery of the craft of illustration encouraged me to pursue the arts and it is a joy to see my son now filling his own sketchbooks. Thank you for passing along the joys of drawing and storytelling. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CNE2QvRG6W\">pic.twitter.com\/CNE2QvRG6W<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lee Kosa (@leekosa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leekosa\/status\/1033026704514547712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 24, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Born in 1926, Heath was an only child raised in New Jersey before moving to Van Nuys\u2014but brought with him inspiration by way of Wild West artists like Will James and Charlie Russell that would spark an illustrious artistic career spanning 1948 all the way to 2011.<\/p>\n<p>While his western and sci-fi work had garnered him attention\u2014his pieces for Timely Comics, later dubbed Atlas Comics, included drawings for\u00a0<em>Black Rider<\/em> and\u00a0<em>All-Western Winners<\/em>,\u00a0while also creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/9672\/journey_into_mystery_1952_1\">the cover for Journey into Mystery #1<\/a>\u2014his strongest and most respected work came out of an odd dichotomy: The female subject and war time.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1950s, Heath&#8217;s work delved into war-based comics, kicking off with Frontline Combat in 1951 for DC comics and starting a long and fruitful relationship with the comic giant.<\/p>\n<p>By 1961, DC had entrusted Heath&#8217;s artistic vision, letting the man wander off into odd combat stories like the famed\u00a0Haunted Tank &#8220;character&#8221; that was featured in DC&#8217;s <em>G.I. Combat<\/em> series. A partnership with writer and editor\u00a0<a title=\"Robert Kanigher\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Kanigher\">Robert Kanigher<\/a>, the Haunted Tank&#8217;s adventures within <em>G.I. Combat<\/em> would make it DC&#8217;s most popular and successful war series (1952-1987), second only to <em>Sgt. Rock<\/em> (whose character prototype made his first appearance in <em>G.I. Combat #68\u00a0<\/em>and which Heath often contributed toward as an artist).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999916948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999916948\" style=\"width: 600px\" which Heath was not compensated on any level.\u00a0Various Heath drawings of fighter jets in\u00a0DC&#8217;s\u00a0<i><a title=\"Men of War (comics)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Men_of_War_(comics)#All-American_Men_of_War\">All-American Men of War<\/a><\/i>\u00a0were the uncredited and uncompensated basis for\u00a0Lichtenstein&#8217;s oil paintings\u00a0<i><a title=\"Whaam!\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whaam!\">Whaam!<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<a title=\"Blam (Roy Lichtenstein)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blam_(Roy_Lichtenstein)\"><i>Blam<\/i><\/a>,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Okay Hot-Shot, Okay!\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Okay_Hot-Shot,_Okay!\">Okay Hot-Shot, Okay!<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0<i><a title=\"Brattata\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brattata\">Brattata<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Heath&#8217;s other strong ability\u2014his knack for creating and depicting beautiful women that blurred lines between reality and comic fantasy\u2014showed up in\u00a0<em>Playboy<\/em>, where his work on the <em>Little Annie Fanny<\/em> comic strip earned him points among male readers who had long ago ditched comics in favor of more adult musings.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Heath was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of
