I know of the complaints toward and exhaustion with making happy hours happen: <em>How dare you mark a dollar off a $10 drink and assume that makes one happy during a particular time of day? What is the point of half-off appetizers when you cut the portion itself in half? WHAT DOES ONE DOLLAR OFF EVEN MEAN?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I get the frustration on both sides of the Happy Hour Menu.<\/p>\n<p>But here&#8217;s the thing, if I may appeal to both consumer and chef alike: Happy hours can very easily draw regular, loyal patrons to both your establishment and dinner menu if you play your cards right.<\/p>\n<p>And Long Beach, thankfully, often plays its cards right when it comes to the hours which bring gastronomical and financial happiness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">****<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999917720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999917720\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-999917720\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Tantalum-Long-Beach-2-970x707.jpg\" alt=\"Tantal\u016bm's interior facing Alamitos Bay in Long Beach.\" width=\"600\" height=\"437\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999917720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tantal\u016bm&#8217;s interior facing Alamitos Bay in Long Beach.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Tantul\u016bm (6272 E. Pacific Coast Highway #J)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I begin with Tantul\u016bm for reasons that go beyond its happy hour menu\u2014mainly the fact that, ironically nestled between the two corporate giants that are Nordstrom Rack and Acapulco, it offers happy-hour-goers one of the most hidden&#8217;n&#8217;quiet spaces to kick back, complete with expansive views of the Alamitos harbor and a forgotten island (mansion) hut feel that makes it one of the most unique happy hours you&#8217;ll have in the city.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, c&#8217;mon, look at that picture.<\/p>\n<p>And the food is actually quite good. You can score six sliders\u2014including two Kobe beef \u2014for $15 (or just order a whole Kobe burger for $12). Chicken wraps for $8. $10 flat breads.<\/p>\n<p>And the best part? 22-ounce pours of craft beer for $7.50.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">****<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999917724\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999917724\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-999917724\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/LosCompadres--969x1293.jpg\" alt=\"Los Compadres' chavela drink. Anaheim St. and M-Th, 3-9 p.m. and Friday, 3-6 p.m. at 1144 Pine Ave.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some\u2014including myself\u2014would argue that the happy hour at Los Compadres is easily one of the best in Long Beach. Casual, approachable, accessible, and outright delicious.<\/p>\n<p>While everything from their spectacular house margaritas to pi\u00f1a coladas to daiquiris and micheladas&#8217;n&#8217;chavelas\u2014like the masterwork pictures shown here\u2014are only $6 and can easily take you from stressed to DGAF, it is the food portion that is truly the bargain.<\/p>\n<p>Everything on the food side of their happy hour is $7. Everything. Queso fundido (chorizo included). Shrimp cocktails. Ceviche. Burritos. Nachos. Their massive quesadillas. Tacos. Sopes. Photo by Brian Addison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Pier 76 (M-F from 3 to 6 p.m. at 95 Pine Ave.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Right across the intersection from L&#8217;Opera sits Chef Chris Krajacic&#8217;s casual seafood powerhouse\u2014and the success of Pier 76 shouldn\u2019t be underestimated. After moving from cramped quarters at the Cooper Arms Building at Ocean and Linden to its more spacious home at First &amp; Pine, Pier 76 is the place where it is rare to not see it buzzing.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the man has opened locations in Cerritos, Tustin, Riverside, and later this month, El Segundo.<\/p>\n<p>And with that grand introduction, I utter three words to highlight Pier 76&#8217;s happy hour: smoked fish tacos\u2014and at $2.76 a pop, they&#8217;re an utter steal.<\/p>\n<p>Krajacic&#8217;s massive folded wonder is up there with the great fish tacos in the city because it is so distinctly Pier&#8217;s creation: smoked fish\u2014completely different from <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rxCuwN\">my other favorite fish taco, El Cheko&#8217;s mighty smoked marlin taco<\/a>\u2014topped with a generous heap of mango salsa.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, enjoy $4 craft pours, bowls of chowder fries, and \u00fcber-cheap ceviche.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">****<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999917736\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999917736\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-999917736\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Harbor-Long-Beach-2289-970x818.jpg\" alt=\"The Harbor's pulled pork tacos. Photo by Brian Addison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The Harbor (M-F, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 130 Pine Avenue)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of\u00a0Chef Chris Krajacic, he took on a new adventure.<\/p>\n<p>It was once Hooters, before it moved to the Pike Outlets. Then it was an off-shoot of Belmont Shore\u2019s La Creperie when it began its own expansion before quickly closing up shop. Then it was La Shish, referred to on the colloquial side as a term for excrement. Then it was Moonshiners, a wannabe craft cocktail joint that offered $125 Hennessy bottle service paired with a champagne room.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it is The Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>Even more, following the closure of The Sky Room after the purchase of the building by Pacific6 for a bottom-to-top renovation, that meant that Cielo, its rooftop bar, would also close\u2014leaving one of the city\u2019s most talented beverage managers, David\u00a0Schmidt, free for the market. Or, in this case, free to tackle The Harbor\u2019s extensive cocktail list.<\/p>\n<p>Here, you&#8217;ll find should-be-$16 cocktails for $8. And on Tuesdays? You&#8217;ll find distinctly unique taco creations like\u00a0Krajacic&#8217;s fiery tri-tip tacos, stuffed with fries and cabbage, lacquered chicken tacos, and smoked pull pork tacos\u2014and you get two massive tacos for $4.<\/p>\n<p>Add to this free skee ball, pool, shuffle board, giant UNO cards&#8230; And, well, your hour will be more than just happy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">****<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999917955\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999917955\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999917955 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Fuego--970x706.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"437\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999917955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A drink aside Fuego&#8217;s fire pit with a view of Downtown Long Beach. Courtesy of @cocoluvshiver\/Fuego.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Fuego (M-F from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 700 Queensway Drive)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Much like its easterly counterpart mentioned above, Tantal\u016bm, Fuego at Hotel Maya\u2014a space that I have called <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/longbeachize\/outnabout\/ways-escape-long-beach-without-leaving-long-beach\/\">one of the places to escape the city without leaving the city<\/a>\u2014has unparalleled views of Downtown Long Beach from its north-facing shore.<\/p>\n<p>On top that, house margaritas are six bucks during happy hour\u2014and don&#8217;t think these margaritas are light pours. Much like Los Compadres, they&#8217;re heavy on the tequila and balanced out with house made sweet&#8217;n&#8217;sour that parallels some of the best in the city.<\/p>\n<p>You can also score $9 crab cakes and taco plates (with carne asada, chicken, and fish), a giant bowl of guacamole for $6, and a $15 Herradura flight\u2014Blanco, Reposado, A\u00f1ejo included\u2014that is nothing short of awesome. (Any $5 Herradura offering is a steal.)<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, you can meander their mini-beaches (fire pits included) or walk along the shore sidewalk all the way to the Queen Mary. I got a ton of flack for not including it on my best restaurants of 2017 list\u2014Chef Art Gonzalez has not one but two restaurants in the city, this one being his muse so to speak, given it took him well over five years to get off the ground\u2014but in all honesty, I hadn&#8217;t been so it would have been difficult for me to ethically put it on such a list.<\/p>\n<p>It is now becoming a more common part of my dining out routine\u2014especially for its happy hour.<\/p>\n<p>Go for the $2 oysters\u2014some of the best happy hour oysters in the city, if not the best\u2014and the delectable $7 duck fried rice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">****<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999917728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999917728\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999917728 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Panxa-Cocina-Poblano-Fries--970x1268.jpg\" alt=\"Panxa Cocina's poblano fries. Courtesy of Jesse C.\/Yelp!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Panxa Cocina (3937 E Broadway)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Long Beach, meet New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>I segue into Panxa because it is the aforementioned Chef Gonzalez&#8217;s first full-fledged cuisine affair with Long Beach since he returned from Santa Fe (working at McKenna&#8217;s doesn&#8217;t count), where <a href=\"https:\/\/la.eater.com\/2018\/3\/6\/17008340\/panxa-cocina-southwestern-cuisine-new-mexico-long-beach-restaurant\">his love of the Hatch chile and southwestern grub<\/a>\u2014almost entirely devoid in the LA food scene\u2014is so beautifully explored in the linked piece by my friend and comrade Sarah Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>For those not yet ready to throw $20 down on albondigas &#8220;con spatzle&#8221;\u2014a dish that plays with Gonzalez&#8217;s Mexican and German heritage\u2014or $22 for a chicken mole plate, Panxa&#8217;s happy hour is an easy way to explore the world of southwestern cuisine and drinks without sweating the bill too much. (Plus, anything is better than the trying-to-be-fine-dining that was Christie&#8217;s, the restaurant Panxa replaced.)<\/p>\n<p>My suggestion? Get the creamy poblano fries and the Frito pies\u2014each Californian plays on Southwest food\u2014but make sure to ask for a side of Gonzalez&#8217;s spectacular Hatch chile sauce, the most direct homage he pays to New Mexico. Photo by Brian Addison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Padre (Daily from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 525 E Broadway)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Padre brought on\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem;\">Guadalajara-based Chef Manuel Ba\u00f1uelos\u2014the guy who once served up the area\u2019s best <em>torta ahogada<\/em> at Balam in Lynwood (which is still open and still good\u2014the menu was flooded with creations like tacos filled with <em>mole alemandrado<\/em> and witty twists like chicken tinga masala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This plays into their happy hour.<\/p>\n<p>Not only will you score $25 pitcher of prime margaritas\u2014from their tamarind mandarin concoction to the cucumber Pepino margarita\u2014you&#8217;ll find an assortment of perfect-while-drinking apps on the cheap. Like\u00a0Ba\u00f1uelos&#8217; al pastor chicken wings, which are dangerously addictive. Or his yucca fries, large pillars of the root veggie tossed in spices with a dipping sauce. Photo by Brian Addison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Beer Belly (Mondays &amp; W-F, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m, and Sundays 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 255 Long Beach Blvd.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chef Wes\u00a0Lieberher isn&#8217;t lighthearted when it comes to two things: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeachize.com\/first-look-at-beer-bellys-menu-invading-the-stomachs-of-long-beach-nov-11\">his food and his beer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why Beer Belly&#8217;s &#8220;Hoppy&#8221; Hour is a steal for both stomachs and palates alike. Sure, you have a full-fledged burger for $8 and a generous portion of wings for $6 but if you really wanna get down on\u00a0Lieberher&#8217;s style, go for the $6 Al Pastor meatballs [pictured]. There&#8217;s a reason it&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeachize.com\/15-best-restaurants-long-beach-2017-edition\">one of the city&#8217;s best restaurants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps Beer Belly&#8217;s hidden gem is bartender Sherwood\u00a0Souzankari, whose talent for blending flavors is more reflective of the entire LA scene than it is Long Beach specific: sometimes challenging, oftentimes rewarding. Photo by Brian Addison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Lola&#8217;s Mexican Cuisine (M-F from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at both 2030 E 4th St. and 4140 Atlantic Ave.<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s something special about a place when, eschewing the discount of existing items, it dedicates a whole menu to the almighty Happy Hour.<\/p>\n<p>This is Lola&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Its entourage of happy hour grub is $6. Wondering what you can get? There&#8217;s really no need to describe but rather just list: handmade sopes trio, tinga tostaditas, Mexican pizza, queso fundido, mole chicken nachos, Mexican <em>elote<\/em>, guacamole, taquitos,\u00a0a good ol&#8217; quesadilla, and Lola&#8217;s <em>cuetes\u00a0<\/em>[pictured].<\/p>\n<p>On that last one, do not mess around: named after the almighty firework, Lola&#8217;s\u00a0<em>cuetes\u00a0<\/em>are bacon-wrapped stuffed jalape\u00f1os\u2014which are dangerously addictive. Need another suggestion? The sopes trio is a steal and includes one with Lola&#8217;s excellent\u00a0<em>birria\u00a0<\/em>as well as another with carnitas and chicken tinga.<\/p>\n<p>And don&#8217;t forget the $4 Modelo pours, $5 margs or palomas or mules, and $8 craft cocktails (get the La Dama).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">****<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999917725\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999917725\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-999917725\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/LOpera--970x723.jpg\" alt=\"L'Opera's feta bruschetta. Courtesy of Dino D.\/Yelp!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>L&#8217;Opera (M-F from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., all day Sunday at 101 Pine Ave.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Brian Addison.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;Opera is, by many definitions, a Long Beach staple, having introduced the city to fine dining a la Italy since 1990.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, this white cloth-and-crystal establishment has a stellar happy hour that introduces folks to their food\u2014and those folks may very well be those that otherwise can&#8217;t afford its regular menu.<\/p>\n<p>I am talking $9 platters of their menu&#8217;s staples, from pastas to meats.<\/p>\n<p>My suggestions? One should unquestionably go for two dishes if it&#8217;s your first time experiencing L&#8217;Opera.<\/p>\n<p>Start with their\u00a0<em>carpaccio<\/em>\u2014maybe my favorite antipasti<em>\u00a0<\/em>dish in general\u2014composed of ultra-thin layers of raw beef tenderloin, drizzled with olive oil and topped with capers, baby arugula, and shaved parmesan.<\/p>\n<p>After that, go for their housemade pasta\u2014and I suggest, without question, their\u00a0<em>cappellacci di zucca\u00a0<\/em>[pictured], a signature L&#8217;Opera offering of pasta filled with a creamy blend of butternut squash and ricotta, placed over a generous puddle of spicy marinara, and topped with shaved parmesan, fried sage, and finished off with a drizzle of a brown butter sage sauce.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s impeccable. Well, I have four words for you, Garden Grove: all day happy hour.<\/p>\n<p>And I have three more: two-dollar Sapporos.<\/p>\n<p>Tack on some $1.50 oysters and you have yourself the best Creole-centric happy hour in Long Beach. (Sadly, the Crazy Creole Cafe up on Long Beach Blvd.\u2014easily one of my new most underrated joints when I finally decide to update <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rxCuwN\">last year&#8217;s list<\/a>\u2014has yet to institute a happy hour.)<\/p>\n<p>They have a lot more. $2 Cajun fries. $6 fried seafood platters. And then meta-happy hours, happy hours within happy hours: afternoon happy hours everyday from 3 to 7 p.m. that give you $18 crab claws, shrimp, and oysters in one giant cocktail platter and late night happy hours (M-Th, 9 to 11 p.m.; Fri and Sat, 10 to 11 p.m.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">****<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76186\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76186\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-76186\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/MaruMaki-970x974.png\" alt=\"Maru Maki's array of sushi rolls. Photo by Brian Addison.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Maru Maki (All Day, Every Day at 745 E Broadway)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Surely, some are going to holler at me: &#8220;Why are you including a so-so sushi joint?&#8221; &#8220;This place isn&#8217;t that great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And, to be honest, there isn&#8217;t stellar sushi or Japanese food in Long Beach at all; that isn&#8217;t me throwing shade but just pointing out a very blunt reality. (That actually goes for a lotta food. We are getting there but we have a bit to go as well, which is why I encourage others to step out of the city.)<\/p>\n<p>While I am certainly not saying our city is ready for a Sushi\u00a0Ginza Onodera or n\/naka\u2014we are not\u2014I am pretty confident we can something along the quality of Sushi Gen (whose $32 sashimi lunch platter is one of the best plates at that price you&#8217;ll get anywhere).<\/p>\n<p>So Maru Maki, in every sense of the word, is a deal.<\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s how it works: You pay an $8 sitting and after that, almost every roll is $3. Decent\u2014key word:\u00a0<em>decent<\/em>\u2014sashimi cuts are also $3, giving you two pieces of either yellowtail, red snapper, ahi or maguro tuna, or salmon. (They&#8217;re often sliced on the thick side so don&#8217;t expect these pieces to be single-bites.)<\/p>\n<p>Also, definitely get their pepper jack cheese tempura sticks. Don&#8217;t think you&#8217;ll be getting one of Roxanne&#8217;s stellar tiki drinks\u2014easily the best in the city, if not the region\u2014for some super cheap price.<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>But you will be able to order them with owner Robert Molina&#8217;s distinctly Latin American inspired grub, where his Salvadoran roots come out in appetizers that are on the cheap during happy hour.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m talking empanadas\u2014easily some of the best north of PCH\u2014and gouda nachos. I&#8217;m talkin&#8217; $1.50 wings (go with the tamarind BBQ\u2014you won&#8217;t regret it). They&#8217;ve sat on my inaugural Best Restaurants list and the Dene empire\u2014whether you want to admit it or not\u2014altered the food scene in here in Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p>As fine dining, even in Naples, begins to take a giant step back, Michael&#8217;s has done so with it. More uncommon are the $60 plates and more welcoming are the happy hours.
