So, in the spirit of Arts Month, we at the <em>Post<\/em> have partnered with the Arts Council for Long Beach to bring you our <em>October Arts Month of Murals<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Using the Arts Council\u2019s working database of the wide array of murals located throughout the city, once a week during the month of October we\u2019ll bring to your attention five murals that you may have never heard of or had a chance to visit yet, grouped under one cohesive theme and plotted on a comprehensive map. So, whether you choose to visit each one or just read about them, you can find out where they are, who they were painted by and when they were completed.<\/p>\n<p>Read below to learn about five Long Beach murals honoring women (and stay tuned for next week\u2019s list).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diego Rivera &amp; Frida Kahlo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51199\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/guadarrama.jpg\" alt=\"guadarrama\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=1059543340769012&amp;set=a.140539002669455.27378.100001400697715&amp;type=3&amp;theater\">Erick Guadarrama<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is the woman featured in local artist\u2019s Erick Guadarrama\u2019s mural next to the historic Packard building off of East Anaheim Street, owned by Millworks Long Beach and occupied by WE Labs.<\/p>\n<p>Completed in March, Guadarrama worked on the piece with SPARC (Social and Public Art Resource Center), according to the Arts Council, to brighten the exterior of <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/business\/we-labs-celebrates-grand-opening-at-packard-building-friday\/\">WE Labs\u2019 new co-working space<\/a> that opened in April.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/sander\/WeLabsII02.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/business\/we-labs-celebrates-grand-opening-at-packard-building-friday\/\">WE Labs to Celebrate Grand Opening at Packard Building Friday<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>Most recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/studio-one-eleven-murals\/\">Guadarrama completed an indoor mural entitled <em>Barrio Basquiat<\/em><\/a>, a nod to the acclaimed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, within the new offices of Studio One Eleven and Perkowitz + Ruth (P+R) Architects.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/erick.jpg'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/studio-one-eleven-murals\/\">Four Artists Plus Bumblebeelovesyou to Paint Studio One Eleven&#8217;s New Office Space in Long Beach<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p><strong>Village Pride with Sights High<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51200\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/160_Unity-_Village_Pride_with_Sight_High.jpg\" alt=\"160 Unity- Village Pride with Sight High\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Image courtesy of the Arts Council for Long Beach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Painted in 1992 by artist Ricardo Mendoza and youth assistants Rigoberto Bernal, Juan Espinoza, Phillip Lopez, George Flores and Daniel Moreno, the mural on the Drake Park Community Center depicts the theme \u201cunity through strength of diversity,\u201d according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.muralconservancy.org\/murals\/village-pride-sights-high\">Los Angeles Mural Conservancy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The man and woman of the mural join hands and look upward, as the trunk of a tree between them shows intertwining roots of different colors. The power of education is a secondary theme, according to the conservancy, shown by the staircase of books.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Restore<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51201\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/restore.jpg\" alt=\"restore\" width=\"640\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jonhalllovesyou\/\">Jon Hall.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tattoo artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jonhalllovesyou\/\">Jon Hall<\/a> is a regular of the Broadway barbershop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/syndicatebarbershop\/\">Syndicate<\/a>, and grew tired of the \u201cugly wall in the alley\u201d painted with \u201cdifferent tones of grey from graffiti being painted over\u201d all the time, he told the <em>Post<\/em>. He proposed to the neighboring Irish pub, Gallaghers, to cover his supplies if he painted their wall. Lo and behold, they agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my favorite neighborhood in Long Beach and thought it needed something,\u201d said Hall. \u201cI&#8217;ve been doing tattoos for 15 years and always wanted to open a shop on that street [&#8230;] I figured my art [could] be on that block in some way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman in the headdress is reminiscent of Hall\u2019s trips to Mexico. Every two weeks he travels there to distribute food and clothes. The woman in the headwrap reminds him of the humanitarian work he did in Haiti.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI paint the eyes darker and red[&#8230;] like they\u2019ve been through alot, but they can be restored, they can be made new,\u201d said Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Completed in August with the help of artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/howdyall\/\">Howdy<\/a>, who painted the lettering, Hall said one of his favorite parts of the process was \u201call the people in the community coming to say hi and talk to me, saying how they thought it was so great that their block was getting a mural finally,\u201d and Tim, the barbershop\u2019s owner, strumming away on his guitar outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically it\u2019s a positive word to remind people that they can always be made new; there is always hope for restoration,\u201d said Hall lof the mural\u2019s title, <em>Restore<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12 Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-51202\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC_0413.JPG\" alt=\"DSC 0413\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Asia Morris.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Local artist Jose Loza&#8217;s <em>12 Steps<\/em> Creative Corridor Challenge mural at Intercity Fellowship Hall in North Long Beach symbolizes rebirth, although the artist ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/jose-loza-mural\/\">created a design for the viewer to interpret on their own<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat way if somebody looks at it they can take whatever they want from it,\u201d Loza told the <em>Post<\/em> in April. \u201cIt\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve tried that on a project and so far so good. People come up with their own ideas about the mural.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; float: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100px; height: 100px; background-image: url('images\/asia\/joselozaintercity\/DSC_0838.JPG'); background-size: cover; background-position: center center; float: left; margin-right: 30px; display:none;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <small style=\"font-weight: lighter;\">RELATED<\/small> <\/p>\n<h2 ><a onclick=\"ga('send', 'event', 'Related Link', 'click', 'Realted Link v1');\" href=\"https:\/\/staging-live.lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/jose-loza-mural\/\">New North Long Beach Mural Symbolizes Rebirth; Artist Leaves Interpretation to Viewer<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%; float:left;\" \/>\n<p>But considering the work is on the side of a facility that serves as a meeting place for drug and alcohol recovery, it also raises awareness about the services offered inside to those in need.<\/p>\n<p>Completed in May, the placement of the mural benefits the community by displaying the idea of hope as a replacement to the vandalism that once occurred in the location, according to the Arts Council.
