The following is a curated roundup of weekend events in Long Beach published every Wednesday on the Hi-lo/Long Beach Post. Have an event to share? Email cheantay@lbpost.com with “Things to Do” in the subject line.

By calendar standards, summer is nearly halfway over. Why not make the most of free outdoor movie screenings? Their days are numbered. So we found two, just for you. Leading up to the weekend we’ve got a promising DJ night. Then, for our tactile friends, a painting tutorial you will feel more confident in with every sip. What you’re sipping is entirely up to you.

For our beer lovers out there, Brewery Knolls is firing up again this weekend. And, make sure to check out a new art gallery opening this weekend at the Dark Art Emporium. Also if it’s not your thing, there’s always pizza.

Joining him is DJ Phatrick (Motown on Mondays LA) and DJ Nativity. When you show up, make sure to wish Sasha a happy 30th birthday.

The show is free, however, RSVP is strongly recommended, click here.

BREWERY KNOLLS BEER CRAWL – BIXBY KNOLLS (Saturday)

Trolley route map for the Brewery Knolls Beer Crawl courtesy BKBIA.

After a very long and sad hiatus, Brewery Knolls is back this Saturday, Aug. 14. Hop on a double-decker Big Red Bus, for free, and visit the many breweries, bars and restaurants in Bixby Knolls ready to pour you a tall glass of—beer, wine, whatever. They’re just happy to have you.

The bus will drive the same route (shown above) for four hours (from 2 to 6 p.m.) It’s a family-friendly service, organizers promise, so feel OK to bring the kiddos.

Follow the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association on Instagram or Facebook to find the bus tracker link that will show the live location of the Big Red Bus. They’ll post that online the day of the event.

DAVID VAN GOUGH “INFERNAL” OPENING RECEPTION – DARK ART EMPORIUM (Saturday)

Art by David Van Gough. Image courtesy Dark Art Emporium/Facebook.

A self-titled “necrosurrealist” painter, David Van Gough explores themes of mortality, religion and the occult by twisting reality to his morbid curiosities and perspectives. It may be no surprise, then, that his themes and style make his work an ideal fit to adorn the Dark Art Emporium’s black walls this weekend.

On Saturday, Aug. 14 Van Gough’s exhibition “Infernal-The Denouement” will be publicly revealed. It is the third part of the Liverpool, England-born painter’s series he started in 2014. The exhibition was inspired by personal experiences (his own brush with death and the passing of this father in 2020) and the works of T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” and Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno.”

And since you have to walk through the pizza bar, The 4th Horseman, to get to the gallery, why not stop there for a slice afterward? Might make you feel better. Or not. We’re not trying to tell you what to do.

The reception is from 5-9 p.m. and is free to attend.

The Dark Art Emporium is at 121 W. Fourth St.
