NAMM (National Association of Music Merchandisers) is the largest event I’ve ever been to.  For 4 days in January, it takes up the entire Anaheim Convention Center, including the basement and upper floors.  It even spills out into nearby hotel meeting spaces.  Manufacturers, big and small, of music related products (instruments, accessories, recording equipment, lighting, software, etc)  from all over the world converge to showcase their products in the hope of having retailers carry them.
Not surprisingly, China has played a growing role in the manufacturing of musical instruments and electronic components.  How does this relate to Long Beach?  Meet Louis Wu.  His company, Ohana Music, works with Chinese instrument builders to produce mid-level ukuleles, guitars, and accessories which are then imported and distributed to retail music stores.
Jay Buchanan, a talented singer, songwriter, and musician in the Long Beach music scene, was a featured artist at the Martin Guitar Company booth.

Tom “TV” Jones has developed a name for himself as a producer of classic style Gretsch guitar pickups.  His work was highly sought after by players and collectors of vintage instruments and, eventually, he was hired by the Gretsch company to produce pickups for them.  He is also a talented electric guitar builder, and got his start right here in Long Beach at World of Strings.
I’m sure that other individuals and companies were represented at this year’s Winter NAMM and, if you know of any, please let me know.
