Muldoon’s Saloon in North Long Beach will be holding a fundraiser this Sunday for a former Long Beach resident who is credited with saving people before he was shot earlier this month during the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival in the country’s worst mass shooting in modern history.

Patrick Conlon, owner of the dive bar, said he decided to create the fundraiser for Jonathan Smith, who currently resides in Buena Park, after meeting him at a fundraiser in Paramount organized by We Charge LA, an active Los Angeles Chargers fan club.

“I myself am a Charger fan and was very impressed that he legitimately risked his life to help other people he’d probably never even met before,” Conlon told the Post in an email. “The guy was shot and that bullet could have landed somewhere fatal and that would be the end of everything for him.”

Not only are both Conlon and Smith Chargers fans (Smith got to tour the Chargers’ practice facility and meet some athletes) but Smith also used to live across the street from Muldoon’s, which recently declared itself a Chargers bar.

“It just made sense to throw the event for Jonathan,” Conlon added.

Smith is credited with ushering people to safety before he was shot in the neck, resulting in a fractured collarbone, a cracked rib and a bruised lung, according to the Washington Post which profiled his heroism soon after the shooting.

“He didn’t have to do this [fundraiser],” Smith told the Post. “But it’s a blessing and an honor.”

Smith said while the healing process is coming along he still has pain in his arm and neck which has left him without being able to go back to work.

Muldoon’s will donate part of its proceeds to Smith to go toward his medical bills from 8:00AM to 8:00PM on Sunday, October 29 when the Chargers take on the New England Patriots. Guests can also write out checks to Smith who will be in attendance.

“We encourage people to drink responsibly but drink until right before it becomes irresponsible,” Conlon advised. “Let’s raise some funds for this guy!”

Muldoon’s is located at 5646 North Paramount Boulevard.
