3:30pm | The iconic Long Beach Art Theatre on 4th Street opens a full slate of awesome weekend entertainment with improv comedy tonight, as celebrated local troupe Cherry Spitz will take the stage at 9:00pm.

The Los Angeles and Orange County improv group is more than just an awesome poster and a name that sounds like a pink-colored cocktail. Cherry Spitz was named “Best Improv Comedy Group” by MyFOXla and they’re even bringing hip-hop duo Bonafide Audio along tonight. Click here to pick up tickets for the 9:00pm show.

In continuing with their Friday midnight frightfests (next week is The Human Centipede, ewwww), the Art Theatre will present a midnight showing of the zombie classic 28 Days Later. The show is brought to you by Mondo Celluloid, the Los Angeles film group that presents unique movies at local independent theaters. The non-profit’s executive director Logan Crow spoke to the staging-live.lbpost.com’s Sander Wolff back in March.

But the Art Theatre has much more in store this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, they’ll be showing Enemies Of The People: A Personal Journey Into The Heart Of The Killing Fields. This award-winning documentary follows the journey of journalist Thet Sambath, who lost his parents and siblings in the notoriously brutal Khmer Rouge genocide, as he confronts those who were most responsible and tries to piece together his past.

Obviously, the message of Enemies Of The People rings close to home in Long Beach, which boasts the largest Cambodian population in the world (outside of Cambodia itself). The killing fields genocide is one of history’s most tragic yet least understood stories. Check out the Art Theatre homepage and click Showtimes to find ticket information for shows this Saturday and Sunday, both at 5:00pm.

The theatre is also hosting the #1 movie in the country, The American starring George Clooney, throughout the weekend.
