EJ Malloy’s is a wonderful Irish style pub that graces the Long Beach community with two locations, one on Broadway near Redondo and another on Atlantic in Bixby Knolls. The two share many similarities, including the food menu, the décor, and a whole slew of televisions displaying the major daily sporting events. Still, each place offers a little something unique.

EJ’s on Broadway is a long, skinny place that does not serve liquor, but has a great beer garden patio in the back where you can enjoy their large draft beer selection. On cooler nights, they have both a stone fire pit as well as heaters near the tables. While EJ’s on Atlantic has patio seating, it faces the street and provides more people watching in a less intimate atmosphere. However, the Atlantic location is wider and more open inside and it does have a full bar, so Irish whiskey and all manner of other cocktails are available for your sipping pleasure.

We kicked things off last night at the EJ Malloy’s on Broadway with a tall pitcher of Moose Drool Nut Brown Ale. The inside was packed with basketball fans, so we sat on the beer garden patio and enjoyed the light and warmth of the fire pit. You will find many of the usual pub favorites, such as Fish and Chips, Buffalo Wings, and a large selection of sandwiches including Philly Cheese Steak, French Dip, and EJ’s Special, a hot link sausage sandwich with some kick. I finally tried the Hot Pastrami Sandwich, which is served on rye bread with cheese, mustard, pickles, lettuce and tomato. I am sometimes hesitant to order pastrami because many places fail to live up to my favorite, The Hat in Glendora. However, EJ’s generous portion of pastrami was thinly sliced and incredibly tender, and it did not disappoint.

EJ Malloy’s also serves fresh salads and various dinner entrees including Baby Back Ribs, Smoked Tri-Tip, and Chicken Fried Steak. Their burgers are 1/3 pound and cooked to perfection, served on a soft bun and with fresh veggies on the side for you to add in as you please. You can get them with bacon, guacamole, chili… the list goes on and are all worth a try.

The sides deserve a paragraph of their own. They have delicious crisscut fries, onion rings, and pasta salad just to name a few. The onion rings are lightly breaded whole onion slices, nicely crisped and not too greasy. The fries are crispy and thick with a light seasoning, while the pasta salad has al dente corkscrew pasta, tomatoes, olives and other fresh veggies tossed with Italian dressing. But all of these tasty tidbits pale in comparison to the Gorgonzola Fries. They cover the crispy crisscut fries with an absolutely sinful gorgonzola cheese sauce that is rich and flavorful, and it only costs one dollar more than the standard sides. They are a highlight of any trip to EJ’s, including last night’s adventure.

I generally don’t do dessert either, not because I don’t like it, but because usually I am just way too stuffed. Last night there were four of us so I figured dessert would not hurt since we were all going to share anyhow. We ordered the Brownie al a mode and man, was it worth it. The brownie was hot and gooey, with fudge inside and the moistest cake that I have had in a brownie in a long time. They covered it with fudge and caramel and added a few scoops of ice cream. It was unbelievable, and an incredibly decadent way to finish up a scrumptious meal.

Whichever part of Long Beach you call home, you need to make a trip to one or both of the EJ Malloy’s pubs. They are fun places to get together, catch a ballgame over some tasty food, and quench your thirst.
