9:37am | Local record store Fingerprints held a special live performance on Tuesday night that drew devoted fans of folk/soul singer G. Love, who performed several tracks from his new album Fixin’ To Die and said he was happy to add to a long list of good memories performing in Long Beach.
The singer, who also plays the guitar and harmonica during his sets, opened with a new song called “Milk and Sugar” (video below) and kept the full house glued to the stage.
It was the fourth live show that Fingerprints has held since moving to a new location on 4th Street near downtown Long Beach. Owner Rand Foster said he was very pleased with the response to the show, as all 200 tickets were pre-sold in advance.
G. Love is most closely associated with former musical partner Jack Johnson, and frequently tours with the Dave Matthews Band. But on Tuesday night he spoke of his fondness for performing in small shops like Fingerprints, and thanked Foster for organizing live shows back in the 1990’s. He recalled memories of coming to Long Beach to jam with local legends Sublime.
“I always love coming down to the LBC,” he told the crowd, then chuckled. “It’s just, there aren’t that many places to play.”
The show also celebrated the official release of the album, Fixin’ To Die, produced by the critically-acclaimed Avett Brothers who performed onstage with Bob Dylan at the Grammy Awards just a few weeks ago.
Fixin’ To Die is currently the No. 6 most purchased album on iTunes.
“I just feel like a kid on Christmas morning right now,” G. Love told the crowd. He finished his set with a performance of the title track, and stayed to sign autographs and take photos with fans.
Foster says that Fingerprints is planning several more big-name live performances in the next few weeks.
